Bariloche Chocolate Festival

Bariloche’s Fiesta Nacional del Chocolate takes place each year during Easter week (Semana Santa), typically in late March or early April. The city has been producing high-quality chocolate since the early twentieth century, when European - primarily Swiss and German - immigrants established artisan confectionery workshops. Today, the main street, Calle Mitre, is lined with chocolate shops, and the festival is a direct celebration of this heritage.

The centrepiece event is the construction of the world’s longest chocolate bar, assembled by local chocolatiers along the shore of Nahuel Huapi lake or along Mitre itself. The bar, which has exceeded 100 metres in some editions, is built over several days and then distributed free to the public on the final afternoon - queues form early. The attempt has previously achieved Guinness World Records recognition.

Alongside the chocolate bar construction, the festival includes tastings, demonstrations by master chocolatiers, competitions open to professionals and amateurs, and street markets. Local shops offer special festival editions of their products - truffles, pralines, and traditional Argentine confections made with dulce de leche incorporated into chocolate.

Easter week in Bariloche also coincides with significant numbers of Argentine domestic tourists taking advantage of the school holiday period. Accommodation books out well in advance - this is one of the busiest weeks of the year in the city. The lake and the surrounding Nahuel Huapi National Park are accessible for day hikes and boat trips throughout the festival period.

Bariloche’s chocolate tradition traces to Central European immigration in the early 1900s - families from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria settled in the Patagonian lake district and brought confectionery skills with them. Rapa Nui, Mamushka, and Abuela Goye are among the older-established shops on Mitre Street, each with their own house specialties. Argentine chocolate uses a higher proportion of dulce de leche than European traditions, and several shops have developed varieties incorporating local Patagonian products including rosehip and dried Patagonian fruits.

Easter week also makes Bariloche one of the most crowded weeks of the Argentine domestic travel calendar. Accommodation at quality mid-range hotels - Llao Llao Road hotels on the western lakeshore, or the Cerro Catedral area south of the city - should be booked at least three to four months ahead for this period. The off-season shoulder period immediately before Easter (late February to mid-March) offers the same lake scenery with significantly fewer visitors.
