Buenos Aires International Book Fair

The Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires is one of the largest book fairs in the world by attendance, drawing approximately 1.2 to 1.4 million visitors over its three-week run each year. It takes place at La Rural, a large exhibition complex in the Palermo neighbourhood, typically running from late April through mid-May.

The fair covers the full publishing spectrum: Argentine publishers occupy a significant portion of the floor space, but international publishers from Spain, Mexico, Colombia, France, Germany, and beyond attend in large numbers. The Spanish-language publishing world treats Buenos Aires as one of its two or three most important commercial events of the year. Rights deals, co-publishing agreements, and author signings all happen here in volume.

For visitors, the public programme is the main draw. The fair runs a dense schedule of author readings, panel discussions, workshops, and signing sessions across multiple stages. Argentine writers - many of international standing - appear alongside translated foreign authors. Children’s programming runs daily. Evening events often draw large audiences and require separate registration.

Entry is paid; tickets are available at the door and online. The fair is open daily, with extended hours on weekends. School groups visit on weekday mornings, which means late morning and early afternoon on weekdays can be crowded. Evenings tend to be quieter and better suited to browsing.

Argentine literary fiction has a global reputation that makes Buenos Aires Feria something more than a commercial trade event - it is also a site of cultural prestige. Ricardo Piglia, Tomás Eloy Martínez, and Luisa Valenzuela are among the writers who have appeared at the fair’s most celebrated sessions in previous decades; the contemporary scene is anchored by publishers like Eterna Cadencia and Adriana Hidalgo, both of which run active stands.

La Rural itself sits in the Palermo neighbourhood, a short taxi ride from the main hotel districts. The nearest Subte stop is Scalabrini Ortiz on the D line. Entry fees as of 2025 ran approximately ARS 3,000–5,000 per day (subject to change given Argentine inflation - check the Fundación El Libro site for current pricing). Children under 12 enter free on most days. The fair is busiest on weekends and the first and last days; a midweek morning visit offers the most comfortable browsing experience.
