Cosquín National Folk Festival

The Cosquín National Folk Festival (Festival Nacional del Folklore de Cosquín) has been running every January since 1961, making it one of the longest-running music festivals in Latin America. It takes place in the small town of Cosquín in the Punilla Valley, about 60 kilometres from the city of Córdoba, over ten consecutive nights on the Plaza Próspero Molina - an open-air stage that holds tens of thousands of spectators.

The festival covers the full breadth of Argentine folk music: chacarera, zamba, chamamé, cuarteto, and malambo, among other regional genres. Performers range from legendary names who have appeared since the festival’s earliest editions to new artists competing in the official selection process. The festival also includes a pre-Luna competition earlier in January, which serves as a qualifier for emerging talent.

Cosquín town fills to capacity during the festival. Accommodation books out months in advance - visitors who plan to attend should reserve early, either in Cosquín itself or in the nearby towns of La Falda, La Cumbre, or the city of Córdoba, where buses run throughout the evening. Entrance to the main stage requires a ticket; prices vary by date and seating area. General standing areas near the stage can be accessed more informally.

The surrounding Punilla Valley is worth exploring before or after the festival - the Córdoba Sierras offer clear-water rivers, hiking trails, and small colonial towns within a short drive.

The malambo is one of the festival’s most visually striking performances: a solo male percussive footwork dance of indigenous and gaucho origin, danced with spurs and a knife in the belt, performed in strict competition format with categories for adults and youth. The competitive rounds often draw the most focused audiences of the entire festival.

Tickets for the main stage vary by date: weeknights early in the festival are cheaper (around ARS 20,000–35,000 per person as of 2026; prices subject to inflation), while the final weekend - which features the biggest names - commands a premium. Book online through the festival’s official site once dates and lineups are announced, typically in November or December of the prior year. The town of Cosquín has few large hotels; most visitors rent private rooms or use booking apps to find accommodation in the surrounding area. Arriving in Cosquín by bus from Córdoba city (roughly 1.5 hours) is the most practical approach.
