Where to Stay in Ushuaia

Ushuaia has a concentrated accommodation scene along the main avenues and on the slopes above the channel. The city is compact enough that almost any hotel within the urban area is within walking distance of the waterfront and the main tour operators. The key variables are channel views, proximity to the bus terminal, and whether you are travelling in summer or winter ski season.

Budget — Hostels (approximately USD 22–40 per person per night)

Yakush Hostel is a centrally located hostel with a well-regarded kitchen and social areas. Dorm beds start at approximately USD 25–35 per person (as of 2026), with private rooms from USD 75–90 per night. The staff can assist with tour bookings, which is useful given the number of operators in Ushuaia.

Freestyle Hostel sits close to the bus terminal, convenient for early departures to the national park or connections to El Calafate. Dorms from approximately USD 22–30 per person; simple and functional.

Cruz del Sur Hostel is another solid option in the centre, with a communal lounge area and adequate kitchen facilities. Dorms start around USD 24–32 per person.

Mid-Range — Hotels (approximately USD 100–200 per night)

Hotel Cap Polonio is one of Ushuaia’s better-positioned mid-range hotels, on Avenida San Martín and within easy walking distance of both the waterfront and the main tour strip. Doubles run approximately USD 110–150 per night as of 2026. Rooms are comfortable; the hotel has an on-site restaurant.

Los Naranjos Hotel offers clean, well-maintained rooms at competitive rates for Ushuaia, at approximately USD 100–140 per night. Central location with reliable Wi-Fi — useful if you are working remotely between excursions.

Tierra de Leyendas is a small boutique property about 3 km from the centre, elevated enough to have clear Beagle Channel views. It has nine rooms and a strong reputation for food — the restaurant sources locally from the Beagle Channel and regional farms. Doubles from approximately USD 170–220.

Luxury — Channel-View and Boutique Hotels (from approximately USD 220 per night)

Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort sits on the mountainside above the city, reached by a short road from the centre. The channel and city views from the upper rooms are among the best in town. It has a spa, indoor heated pool, and all-day dining. Doubles from approximately USD 220–320 per night as of 2026. Transfers to the town centre are available.

Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa occupies a hillside reserve of native lenga beech forest about 8 km east of the centre — the furthest out but with the most dramatic setting. The resort has its own nature trails, a full-service spa, and indoor and outdoor pools. Rates from approximately USD 280–450 per night; transfers to the centre are provided. Best suited for those prioritising the property itself over immediate access to the city.

Hotel Albatros is a more central upmarket option, walking distance from the waterfront and restaurants. Doubles from approximately USD 200–260, with channel views from upper-floor rooms.

Notes for Ski Season (June–October)

During the winter ski season, Cerro Castor resort (26 km out of town) draws visitors who want to ski every day. Staying centrally in Ushuaia and taking the daily ski shuttle remains the most practical approach — there is no on-mountain accommodation equivalent to a ski resort village. Budget for shuttle costs of approximately USD 20–30 return per day on top of your hotel.

Practical Notes

  • Book in advance for January–February (summer peak) and July–August (ski peak); Ushuaia has limited beds for its visitor numbers
  • The airport (USH) is 4 km east of the city centre; most hotels can arrange transfers, or taxis cost approximately USD 10–15
  • All prices above are indicative as of 2026 and subject to seasonal variation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Ushuaia?
The city centre, within a few blocks of Avenida San Martín, is the most practical base. It puts you close to the waterfront, tour operators, restaurants, and the bus connections to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Higher-elevation properties above the town may have better channel views but involve a short uphill walk.
Are there hotels near Tierra del Fuego National Park?
There is no accommodation inside the national park itself. All visitors stay in Ushuaia town and take the bus or taxi to the park entrance, which is 11 km west of the city centre.
Is Ushuaia expensive for accommodation?
Yes, relative to other Argentine cities. As a remote tourism hub in the deep south, operating costs are higher than Buenos Aires or Mendoza. Budget travellers should expect to pay approximately USD 25–35 for a hostel dorm, while mid-range doubles run USD 100–180. Demand during the January–February and July–August peaks drives prices higher.
