Ushuaia city on the Beagle Channel with the snow-capped Martial Mountains rising behind

Ushuaia: Travel Guide

Ushuaia is the world's southernmost city, at the tip of Tierra del Fuego — gateway to the Beagle Channel, penguin colonies, and Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Ushuaia is a city of around 75,000 people on the Beagle Channel coast of Tierra del Fuego, the archipelago at the southern tip of South America. It is the southernmost city in the world, 3,000 km south of Buenos Aires, and sits between the channel and the steep Martial Mountains that rise directly behind the urban area. The city functions simultaneously as a tourist destination, a base for Antarctic expeditions (most cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula depart from here), and a working port and administrative centre. Its remote position, dramatic setting, and the concentration of accessible wilderness within Tierra del Fuego National Park make it one of Argentina’s most distinctive destinations.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

The national park begins at the western edge of the city and covers 63,000 hectares of Fuegian Andes — beech forest, peat bogs, mountain lakes, and the Beagle Channel shoreline. The park has no entry fee for pedestrian visitors; a fee applies for vehicles. Marked trails range from 30-minute waterfall walks to the multi-day Coastal Route that runs along the channel shore to Bahía Lapataia, the official southern terminus of Pan-American Route 3. The Lapataia area has camping, a lake circuit, and beaver dams — North American beavers were introduced in 1946 and have extensively modified the landscape, a problem that conservation efforts are still addressing.

Beagle Channel

The Beagle Channel — named after the HMS Beagle, which carried Charles Darwin on his 1830s expeditions — runs 240 km between Tierra del Fuego and a chain of smaller islands. Boat tours from Ushuaia’s pier operate year-round, covering sea lion colonies on rocky outcrops, the Les Éclaireurs lighthouse, and the channel’s bird life including albatross, petrels, and cormorants. Full-day excursions extend to Martillo Island for the penguin colony. The channel’s calm, protected waters make it navigable in most conditions.

Martillo Island Penguins

Magellanic and gentoo penguins nest on Martillo Island from October to March. The Magellanic penguins arrive first (October) and depart by March; gentoos, smaller and more boldly marked, also breed here. Landing tours are strictly managed — groups are accompanied by guides and keep to marked routes around the colony. The experience of walking among several thousand penguins at close range is what draws most visitors. Advance booking is strongly recommended for January–February.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Ushuaia ranges from backpacker hostels near the port to mid-range hotels across the city and a handful of higher-end properties on the hillside above the main street. The main tourist strip (Avenida San Martín) is the practical base — restaurants, tour agencies, and the pier are all accessible on foot. Prices are high by Argentine standards.

Getting There and Around

Malvinas Argentinas International Airport (USH) receives multiple daily flights from Buenos Aires (3.5 hours), Buenos Aires Aeroparque, El Calafate, and Bariloche. Long-distance buses connect to Río Gallegos and (via Chile) to Punta Arenas. Within Ushuaia, taxis and the town’s walkable main strip cover most tourist needs; a local bus runs to the national park entrance.

Best Time to Visit

November to March is the primary season — the penguin colony is active, trails are clear, boat tours run fully, and daylight extends past 9pm in midsummer. December and January are the warmest months (8–14°C average) but also the busiest. April and October are quieter and cheaper. Winter (May–September) is cold, dark, and some park infrastructure reduces; skiing at the small Cerro Castor resort (40 km east) is the main winter draw.
