Iguazu Falls: Travel Guide
Iguazu Falls spans 275 waterfalls on the Argentina-Brazil border. Accessed from Puerto Iguazú, the Argentine side has walkways running through the falls.
Iguazu Falls is a system of 275 individual waterfalls along a 2.7 km arc of the Iguazú River, on the border of Argentina’s Misiones Province and the Brazilian state of Paraná. The falls average 64 metres in height; the tallest individual drop — the Garganta del Diablo — plunges 82 metres. At full flow during the wet season, the total water discharge can exceed 13,000 cubic metres per second, making Iguazu the most volumetrically powerful waterfall system in the world. The falls are protected on both sides of the border: Iguazú National Park (Argentina) and Iguaçu National Park (Brazil) are both UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Argentine Park Circuit
Iguazú National Park on the Argentine side is built around three walking circuits. The Lower Circuit (Circuito Inferior, 1.7 km, 1.5–2 hours) follows the riverbank and canyon base, with several viewpoints looking up at the falls from below. The Upper Circuit (Circuito Superior, 1 km, 1 hour) runs along the canyon rim above the falls, looking down into the horseshoe. The Garganta del Diablo walkway (1.1 km over the river, 1 hour return) is a separate catwalk system that extends from an island in the river to a viewing platform above the largest fall. The platform is reached by a small train from the main visitor centre; the combination of all three circuits takes a full day.
Boat Tours and Jungle Activities
From the lower circuit walkway, rubber inflatable boats run by Iguazú Jungle (the park’s licensed operator) depart for the Great Adventure — a boat ride that enters the falls from below, driving under the curtain of water. Passengers are completely soaked; waterproof bags are provided. The experience is 12 minutes of boat time and is the most physically engaging option in the park. Canopy walkways and guided jungle walks into the park’s subtropical Atlantic Forest are available as supplements to the main waterfall circuits.
Wildlife
The forest surrounding the falls is subtropical and holds a high density of wildlife. Coatis (ring-tailed relatives of the racoon) are omnipresent and bold at the visitor centre; do not feed them. Toucans, parrots, and giant swifts that nest behind the falls themselves are regularly sighted on the circuits. Capuchin monkeys, tapirs, and peccaries inhabit the deeper forest and are occasionally seen on the jungle walk options.
Where to Stay
Puerto Iguazú is the Argentine town 18 km north of the park entrance — it has the full range of accommodation from hostels to high-end hotels, and is the practical base for most visitors. There is one hotel (Hotel Cataratas) inside the park itself; it has the advantage of early access to the falls before day visitors arrive, at a price premium.
Getting There and Around
Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport (IGR) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires (about 2 hours) and has connections to other Argentine cities. Long-distance buses from Buenos Aires take around 18 hours. From Puerto Iguazú, local buses run to the Argentine park entrance (40 minutes) and taxis are available. Crossing to the Brazilian side requires passport and a short taxi or bus journey to the Foz do Iguaçu border crossing.
Best Time to Visit
Iguazu is a year-round destination. The wet season (November–March) produces the highest water volumes and most spectacular falls but also heat, humidity, and heavy rain. The dry season (April–September) brings lower but still impressive flows, cooler temperatures (20–25°C), and clearer walking conditions. May and June are particularly good — lower crowds, green vegetation, and reliable weather.
