Things to Do in Puerto Madryn

Puerto Madryn is the gateway to one of South America’s great wildlife destinations. The city of roughly 100,000 people sits on the Golfo Nuevo, a protected bay on the Patagonian Atlantic coast, and owes its modern identity almost entirely to the marine wildlife of the surrounding area. The Peninsula Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 80 km to the north and contains concentrations of southern right whales, orca, southern elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, sea lions, and Patagonian guanacos that are exceptional by any global standard.

Puerto Madryn itself is a functional small city - founded by Welsh settlers in 1865, still home to a Welsh cultural tradition - with good hotels, solid restaurants, and all the logistics for exploring the peninsula. The wildlife is the reason to come.

Whale Watching at Peninsula Valdés

The defining experience of Puerto Madryn. Southern right whales (ballenas francas australes) arrive in the Golfo San José and Golfo Nuevo from around June and remain until December, using the protected waters to mate and give birth. At the height of the season (September–October), it’s possible to see mothers and calves from shore at Playa El Doradillo, 15 km north of Puerto Madryn - the whales come within metres of the beach.

Whale watching boat trips depart from Puerto Pirámides, the only permanent settlement on the peninsula. Full-day tours from Puerto Madryn typically include transport to the peninsula, the entry fee to the protected area, whale watching by Zodiac or larger catamaran at Puerto Pirámides, and stops at wildlife viewpoints. Punta Tombo Penguin Colony

Punta Tombo, approximately 180 km south of Puerto Madryn, hosts the largest Magellanic penguin colony on the South American mainland. Between September and April, over a million penguins use the site for breeding and raising chicks - the sheer scale of the colony, with penguins crossing the paths in front of you and nesting in burrows on both sides, is unlike any other wildlife experience in Argentina.

Guided day trips from Puerto Madryn operate September through April. Journey time approximately 2.5 hours each way. Entry to Punta Tombo costs approximately ARS 5,000–9,000 per person as of 2026 (included in most tours). Book in advance in peak October–November.

Sea Lions at Punta Loma

A more accessible wildlife stop, Punta Loma sea lion colony is just 17 km from Puerto Madryn and is open year-round. Several hundred South American sea lions haul out on the rocky beach below the viewpoint. Entry approximately ARS 3,000–6,000 as of 2026. The site is a half-day outing by remis or rental car, or can be combined with an afternoon at El Doradillo beach.

Orcas at Punta Norte

One of the most dramatic wildlife spectaculars in Argentina happens between February and April at Punta Norte, on the northernmost tip of Peninsula Valdés. Orcas (killer whales) intentionally beach themselves to catch sea lion pups on the shore - an extremely rare behaviour seen here and at very few other places in the world. The event is seasonal and dependent on sea lion pup production; tours to Punta Norte during this window are popular and book out fast.

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Puerto Madryn has a solid scuba diving reputation - the Golfo Nuevo has good visibility and marine life including rays, diverse fish species, and, seasonally, the opportunity to dive near southern right whales (strictly regulated). Several dive operators in Puerto Madryn offer courses and guided dives:

Scuba Duba - One of the most established operators, offering beginner courses, PADI certifications, and guided dives for experienced divers. Shore dives approximately ARS 20,000–35,000 per person as of 2026; boat dives higher.

Lobo Larsen - Specialises in wildlife diving, including whale and sea lion encounters in season. Approximately ARS 35,000–60,000 per dive as of 2026 for the wildlife experiences.

Playa El Doradillo and the Corniche

The Rambla (coastal promenade) along the Golfo Nuevo in Puerto Madryn is a pleasant evening walk. Playa El Doradillo, 15 km north of town, is the best place to see whales from shore during the June–December season - they come within 50–100 metres of the beach. Access is free; take a rental car or remis.

Museo del Hombre y el Mar

Puerto Madryn’s regional museum on the costanera covers the marine ecology of the Golfo Nuevo and the history of Welsh settlement in Patagonia. It’s a useful 1–2 hour visit for context on the wildlife and culture of the region. Entry approximately ARS 2,000–4,000 as of 2026. Welsh Heritage in the Chubut Valley

Puerto Madryn and the Chubut valley (Trelew, Gaiman) were settled by Welsh immigrants from 1865. The town of Gaiman, 65 km west of Puerto Madryn, is the cultural heartland - it has Welsh-language tea houses, a Welsh chapel, and a small museum. The Welsh influence on Patagonian food (particularly the tea-and-cake tradition) is still very much alive. Gaiman is an easy half-day excursion.

Getting Around Puerto Madryn

The town centre is small and walkable. Rental cars are essential for visiting Peninsula Valdés independently. Remises operate for shorter trips and transfers.
