Neuquén is Patagonia’s largest and fastest-growing city — a commercial hub of 380,000 at the confluence of the Limay and Neuquén rivers. It is not a destination in itself for most international travellers, but it functions as the essential transit node for the northern Patagonian lake district: the airport is the busiest in the region, and buses radiate from here to Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes, and the Neuquén wine valley. For those with a specific interest in dinosaur palaeontology (the surrounding region has produced some of the world’s most significant discoveries) or the Río Negro wine region, Neuquén earns a longer stay. Otherwise, one night with a comfortable hotel near the airport or centre is sufficient before continuing southwest.

Where to Stay

Neuquén’s accommodation concentrates in the city centre:

Centro (around Av. Argentina and the main commercial streets) — The urban commercial core with the main hotels, restaurants, and the central bus terminal. Most convenient for early morning bus or flight departures.

Near the airport (western suburbs) — A handful of airport-adjacent hotels useful for very early departures or late arrivals.

Seasonal Notes

  • November–March (Patagonian summer): Peak season for the lake district. Neuquén itself is a transit point; the resort towns of Bariloche and San Martín book up first.
  • July (ski season): Chapelco (near San Martín de los Andes) is the draw; Neuquén sees transit traffic.
  • Year-round: Business city; accommodation availability generally consistent outside regional holiday periods.

Practical Tips

  • The Museo Carmen Funes in Plaza Huincul (90 km west on Route 22) houses a full-scale replica of Argentinosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered — genuinely impressive. Allow a half-day including transit.
  • Río Negro wine valley visits can be arranged as day trips from Neuquén — tour operators near the centre run tours to Familia Schroeder and other bodegas.
  • Book a private airport transfer for night arrivals at NQN.

One night is typical; wine lovers might stay two to visit the Río Negro wineries.

Yes — Presidente Perón International Airport (NQN) is 7 km west of the city centre. It is one of Patagonia's busiest airports, with regular flights to Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities.
