Posadas is the capital of Misiones Province — a subtropical city of 340,000 on the southern bank of the upper Paraná River, directly opposite Encarnación, Paraguay. It sits at the centre of Argentina’s Jesuit Missions region, home to the most significant colonial-era ruins in the country. San Ignacio Miní, 60 km northeast, is the outstanding site — a UNESCO World Heritage complex of 17th-century Jesuit Mission ruins set in jungle. The city itself is hot and lush, with a pleasant riverside Costanera promenade and a working city atmosphere rather than a tourist-polished veneer. It is primarily used as a base for the Missions circuit and as an overnight stop on the northeast Argentina route.
Where to Stay
Posadas’ accommodation clusters in the city centre, near the Costanera:
Centro (around Plaza 9 de Julio and Av. San Martín) — The main commercial and administrative core, walking distance to the bus terminal, restaurants, and the riverside promenade. Most hotels are here.
Costanera Av. Costanera — The riverside boulevard runs along the Paraná with parks and a beach area; a few hotels here for travellers who want water views.

Seasonal Notes
- October–April: Hot and humid (30–40°C) with regular tropical rain. The jungle is lush. The missions are spectacular after rain.
- May–September: Drier and cooler (18–28°C). The most comfortable conditions for outdoor visits to the ruins. Best season for Posadas and the Misiones circuit.
Practical Tips
- San Ignacio Miní is 60 km northeast on Route 12 — regular buses depart from the Posadas bus terminal. Arrival early morning avoids the midday heat and tour buses.
- The sound-and-light show at San Ignacio Miní runs most evenings in high season — check at the ruins entrance or with Posadas tourism office.
- Book a private airport transfer for late arrivals at PSS — the airport is 12 km out and taxis can be slow after dark.
