San Rafael is a city of around 175,000 people in the southern part of Mendoza Province, 230 km from the provincial capital. It combines two things that rarely coexist at this scale: a functioning wine industry (six denominations of origin, focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Chenin Blanc) and an active outdoor scene centred on the Atuel River canyon, the El Nihuil reservoir system, and the accessible day-trip to Maipo volcano.
It is less internationally visited than Mendoza city but well-established on the Argentine domestic circuit — a destination in its own right rather than a stopover.
Staying in the City Centre
The city grid radiates from Plaza San MartÃn, with the main concentration of hotels, restaurants, and tour operators within a few blocks of Av. Hipólito Yrigoyen and Av. San MartÃn. Everything is walkable in the city centre.

Wine Lodges and Estancias (ARS 200,000–450,000/night)
The wine districts of San Rafael are 20–40 km from the city centre in the General Alvear, El Sosneado, and Monte Comán areas to the south and southeast. Some bodegas offer accommodation within their estates.
Bodega Jean Rivier — a family bodega in the San Rafael wine district with rooms available for guests. The bodega produces Chenin Blanc and Malbec; a stay includes vineyard access and cellar-door tasting. Rates approximately ARS 160,000–240,000 per night including breakfast and wine.

Near the Atuel Canyon
There are a few small lodge options within the Atuel canyon itself, closer to the Valle Grande reservoir:
Cabañas Valle Grande — basic self-catering cabins within the canyon, suitable for those who want to kayak or raft multiple days. From approximately ARS 90,000–130,000 per cabin per night. Facilities are simple — this is camping-adjacent, not hotel comfort.
Seasonal Notes
San Rafael’s summer (December–February) is hot — temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. The pool becomes essential. Spring (September–November) is the best season for rafting (higher river levels from snowmelt) and for vineyard visits (pre-harvest). Autumn (March–May) brings harvest season — the bodega experience is at its peak in March and April when grapes are being picked and processed.
Practical Tips
- Rental cars from Mendoza city are worth considering for the San Rafael leg if combining wine country with Patagonian routes (Route 40 south toward Malargüe and beyond).
- Tour operators in the city centre offer combined Atuel canyon / El Nihuil reservoir day trips — typically half-day rafting on the Atuel (ARS 25,000–45,000 per person) and optional afternoon at the reservoir.
- The Clos de los Siete wine estate, though technically in the Valle de Uco north of Mendoza city, is sometimes included on extended San Rafael wine circuits — confirm with your operator.
