Things to Do in El Calafate

El Calafate exists almost entirely because of one thing: Perito Moreno Glacier. The town sits on the southern shore of Lago Argentino and serves as the base for Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing more than 350 glaciers. That said, the surrounding area has enough variety to fill two or three days beyond the glacier itself.

Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno is the defining experience of El Calafate, and one of the few advancing glaciers in Patagonia. The glacier face stands approximately 60–70 metres above the waterline, stretching five kilometres across. It periodically dams a channel of Lago Argentino, building pressure until the ice ruptures in a collapse - a spectacle that attracts observers from around the world, though it cannot be predicted with precision.

Walkway system (included in park entry): A network of steel walkways and viewing platforms on the southern shore puts visitors at eye level with different sections of the glacier face. Multiple viewing angles are available; allow two to three hours to cover the main walkways at a comfortable pace. The park entry fee is approximately USD 22–25 as of 2026 for international visitors, paid at the Los Glaciares National Park gate.

Boat tours: Several operators run 30-minute boat excursions on Lago Argentino that pass along the glacier face at close range. The view from the water is distinctly different from the walkways - you see the full height of the ice wall and hear the groaning and cracking that accompanies the constant movement. Cost is approximately USD 20–35 per person. Marpatag and Sur Turismo are among the established operators in El Calafate town.

Mini-trekking (on the glacier): The main ice-walking experience. Hielo y Aventura is the licensed operator for glacier trekking and runs two formats: Mini-Trekking (approximately USD 100–130 per person as of 2026) includes a short boat crossing to the northern shore, a forest walk to the glacier edge, crampons fitted on-site, and roughly 1.5–2 hours on the ice surface. Big Ice (approximately USD 145–175 per person) is a longer version with more time on the glacier and greater elevation change. Both include national park entry, equipment, and bilingual guides. Glaciarium - International Museum of Ice

The Glaciarium sits on a hill 6 km from El Calafate town. The permanent collection covers the science and geology of Patagonian glaciers, the Hielo Patagónico Sur (Southern Patagonian Ice Field), and climate change effects on the regional ice mass. Displays are in Spanish and English. The centrepiece is a cryobar - a bar made of ice - accessed through an insulated passage and requiring a rented thermal poncho.

Entry is approximately USD 10–15 as of 2026. The Glaciarium runs its own shuttle from El Calafate town. Allow 90 minutes for the museum and bar combined.

Lago Argentino Boat Excursions

Beyond the Perito Moreno tours, longer boat excursions explore the northern arms of Lago Argentino - Brazo Upsala and Brazo Spegazzini - where the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers calve directly into the lake. Upsala is one of the largest glaciers in South America; Spegazzini has a wall that towers significantly higher than Perito Moreno. These full-day excursions (approximately USD 100–150 per person) depart from Punta Bandera, 50 km west of El Calafate. Operators include Hielo Sur and Solo Patagonia. The tours navigate around icebergs that have calved from Upsala - a distinctive experience that the walkways cannot replicate.

Estancia Visits

Several working estancias (ranches) around El Calafate offer day visits that combine lamb asado lunch, horseback riding across the Patagonian steppe, and demonstrations of traditional sheep-shearing and herding. Estancia Cristina, accessible only by boat along Lago Argentino, adds a trek toward the Upsala Glacier moraine. Estancia Nibepo Aike, closer to town, is a more straightforward half-day option. Prices range from approximately USD 80–180 per person depending on the estancia and inclusions.

Cerro Calafate and Laguna Nimez

For low-effort nature close to town, Laguna Nimez is a freshwater reserve immediately adjacent to El Calafate’s centre. The lagoon hosts flamingos, black-necked swans, and various wading birds. Entry is approximately USD 5 as of 2026. A short walking circuit takes around 45 minutes.

Practical Notes

• Most visitors base themselves in El Calafate for two nights - one for Perito Moreno, one for an optional second glacier excursion or estancia
• Shuttle buses to Perito Moreno depart from the town bus terminal from around 8am and cost approximately USD 15–20 return; book the previous day
• Renting a car gives more flexibility for timing at the park but parking at the walkways can be crowded at midday
• Book glacier trekking and Upsala boat tours at least two to three days in advance in peak season (December–February)
• The El Calafate airport (FTE) has direct connections to Buenos Aires (EZE and AEP) and Ushuaia; transfers to town take around 20 minutes
