Crowded Playa Bristol beach with rambla promenade and high-rise buildings in Mar del Plata, Argentina

Mar del Plata: Travel Guide

Mar del Plata is Argentina's main beach resort city, 400 km south of Buenos Aires on the Atlantic coast, drawing millions of domestic tourists each summer.

Mar del Plata is the largest city on Argentina’s Atlantic coast, with around 680,000 permanent residents, located 400 km south of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires Province. It was developed in the late 19th century as a seaside resort for Buenos Aires’ upper class — the grand villa architecture of the Mar del Plata Rambla and the casino date from this period. Over the 20th century it became accessible to a much wider population and is now the primary summer destination for middle-class Argentine families, receiving around 8 million visitors annually — nearly 3 million in January alone. Outside summer it’s a functional coastal city with a smaller tourist presence.

The Rambla and Playa Bristol

The Rambla Casino complex on Playa Bristol is the iconic image of Mar del Plata — a wide promenade flanking the casino building, backed by apartment blocks and facing a broad sand beach where rows of coloured tent awnings line the sand in summer. The casino (Casino Central) is one of the largest in South America and operates daily. The Bristol beach itself is the most central; it can be extremely crowded in January. The bronze sea lion sculptures on the rambla staircase and the genuine sea lions at the nearby fishing port are both popular. The port’s Puerto Viejo district has good seafood restaurants serving the daily catch.

Puerto and Sea Lions

The fishing port (Puerto de Mar del Plata) is one of the busiest in Argentina. A section of the dockside — the Banquina de Pescadores — has been taken over by a large colony of South American sea lions that live among the fishing boats and can be observed at close range from the public walkways. The port area also has the best concentration of fresh seafood restaurants in the city, serving merluza (hake), langostinos (prawns), and centolla (king crab).

Villa Victoria Ocampo

The Villa Victoria Ocampo is a Tudor-style house built in England and reassembled in Mar del Plata in 1912 — the home of Victoria Ocampo, a major figure in 20th-century Argentine literature, founder of the literary journal Sur, and host to Jorge Luis Borges, Aldous Huxley, Albert Camus, and other writers. The house is now a cultural centre and museum open to visitors; it provides an alternative to the beach-focused mainstream and a window into Argentine intellectual history.

Where to Stay

Mar del Plata has thousands of accommodation options across all categories. The area closest to Playa Bristol and the rambla is the most central. Playa Grande and the south are more expensive and family-oriented. The summer price premium is significant — the same room costs 50–70% less in March than January. Booking months in advance for January and February is essential.

Getting There and Around

Astor Piazzolla International Airport (MDQ) connects to Buenos Aires (1 hour). Long-distance buses from Buenos Aires’ Retiro terminal take 5.5 hours and run very frequently, particularly in summer. Local buses and taxis cover the city; the beach strip from north to south is 20 km and not fully walkable — local buses along the coast road are the practical option.

Best Time to Visit

January and February for the full Argentine beach holiday experience — crowded, hot, energetic. December and March for a calmer version with shorter beach days and more space. Spring and autumn for city exploration, cooler temperatures, and significantly lower prices. The Mar del Plata International Film Festival in November is a cultural highlight for those with specific interest.
