Puerto Madryn is Patagonia’s premier wildlife-watching base — a mid-sized city of around 100,000 people on the shores of Golfo Nuevo, positioned as the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Valdés Peninsula. Southern right whales visit the bay from June through December; elephant seals, sea lions, Magellanic penguins, and (seasonally) orcas populate the peninsula’s beaches. The city itself has a long waterfront promenade, a handful of good seafood restaurants, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure. Most visitors stay two to four nights — enough for a Valdés Peninsula day tour, a whale watching boat trip, and a visit to the Ecocentro marine museum.
Where to Stay in Puerto Madryn
Puerto Madryn’s accommodation is concentrated in two areas:
Boulevard Brown (the waterfront) runs along the bay for several kilometres. Properties here command sea views and direct beach access. The promenade is pleasant for walking and cycling, and the water is calm enough for swimming from December through March. Rooms with sea views carry a premium but are worth it for the whale-watching season.
Town centre (Av. Roca and surrounding streets) is one to three blocks inland from the waterfront. Accommodation here is generally better value, and the central grid puts you within walking distance of the bus terminal, restaurants, and tour operator offices. The walk to the waterfront takes five minutes.
Getting to and from the Airport
Almirante Marco Andrés Zar Airport (PMY) is 10 km east of the centre, around 15–20 minutes by road. Options:
- Taxi — approximately ARS 5,000–8,000 to the town centre as of 2026; confirm the rate before departure.
- Remis (radio taxi) — slightly cheaper if pre-arranged; your hotel can book one.
- No regular bus service from the airport to the centre — taxis are the standard option.
Intercity buses from Buenos Aires (Retiro) and other Patagonian cities arrive at the central bus terminal on Independencia, within walking distance of most accommodation.

Seasonal Notes
- June–December (whale season): Southern right whales are present; peak is September–October. Book accommodation at least 4–6 weeks ahead for this period, especially for waterfront properties.
- December–March: Summer beach season. The town fills with Argentine domestic tourists and the promenade is lively. Slightly cooler than northern Argentina (average 20–24°C) and generally pleasant.
- April–May: Shoulder season. Good availability and lower rates; penguins at Punta Tombo (1.5 hours south) are departing but orcas at Punta Norte can be active in April.
- Winter (June–August): Colder and windier; accommodation rates drop outside peak whale season. The town is quieter but wildlife activities continue.
Practical Tips
- Book Valdés Peninsula day tours from your hotel or through tour operators on Av. Roca — competition keeps prices competitive at around ARS 35,000–55,000 per person for a full-day excursion as of 2026.
- Puerto Madryn is a working city, not a resort — the waterfront is pleasant but the beach is shingle and urban. If you’re expecting a tropical beach experience, recalibrate.
- Book a private transfer from the airport if arriving at PMY outside daytime hours when taxis can be scarce.
- The Ecocentro museum on the waterfront is genuinely excellent for context before heading to the peninsula — worth two hours of your first day.
