Santa Fe is the capital of Santa Fe Province, with around 400,000 people, sitting at the confluence of the Salado and Paraná rivers. Founded in 1573 — earlier than Buenos Aires — it was the seat of the constitutional convention that produced Argentina’s 1853 national constitution. The historic centre preserves several colonial buildings from that era, including the Jesuit church of La CompañÃa and the Casa de la Constitución, which make it one of the more historically significant cities in the Argentine interior.
For travellers heading north to the Litoral or northeast toward Corrientes and Iguazu, Santa Fe is a practical overnight stop with more architectural character than most comparable Argentine provincial capitals.
The Historic Centre
The main concentration of hotels is within walking distance of Plaza 25 de Mayo and the colonial core on and around Calle San MartÃn. This area has most of the restaurants, the main museums, and the Jesuit church. It is the obvious base for visitors with any interest in the city’s history.

Practical Notes
- Santa Fe’s summer is hot and humid (December–February), with temperatures regularly reaching 35°C. Air conditioning is standard in mid-range and above; confirm it works in budget options.
- The city has good restaurant options on Av. Almirante Brown near the Paraná riverfront, and around Calle Obispo Gelabert in the historic centre. Fresh river fish — sábalo, pacú, dorado — is the local culinary strength.
- Taxis are inexpensive; a cross-city ride costs approximately ARS 3,000–5,000 as of 2026. Remises (private hire cars) from the bus terminal are slightly more but fixed-price.
- Santa Fe and Santo Tomé (the adjacent city across the Colgante bridge) function as a single urban area — some accommodation may be technically in Santo Tomé but within easy distance of the Santa Fe historic centre.
