September is one of the best months to be in Buenos Aires. The winter chill drops away as jacaranda trees begin to bloom across Palermo, temperatures settle into the 16–22°C range, and the city’s arts and events calendar fills up with some of its strongest programming of the year.
Teatro Colón: 80th Anniversary Season
Teatro Colón, one of the world’s great opera houses, is in its 80th anniversary season in 2026. September programming includes a new staging of Verdi’s Otello (7–14 September) with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, and a celebration concert on 25 September marking the anniversary itself. Tickets for the concert programme have been selling quickly; if you plan to attend, check the Colón box office site directly now rather than waiting until you arrive.
The building itself is open for guided tours daily except Monday (check current hours on the Colón website), making it accessible even if you cannot secure performance tickets.
BA Market: Design and Craft Fair
BA Market returns to La Rural expo centre in Palermo from 12–14 September 2026. Now one of the largest independent design and artisan fairs in South America, it brings together furniture designers, textile makers, jewellers, food producers and ceramicists from across Argentina. Entry is free on the opening morning; afternoons charge a modest fee. It is the best single event in Buenos Aires for picking up quality Argentine craft work to take home.
Live Music at Movistar Arena
Movistar Arena in Villa Crespo has a strong September schedule, with international and domestic acts announced for most weekends. Argentine rock and pop acts dominate the domestic calendar in September, as many avoid competing with the World Cup and Copa Libertadores summer windows. Check the venue’s official programme — the full September and October lineup is now published.
Weather and What to Bring
Buenos Aires in September is mild but variable. Mornings can be cool (12–14°C), afternoons pleasant (18–22°C), and rain is possible at any point. A light jacket and one waterproof layer are sufficient. September is also whale-watching season in Patagonia — Puerto Madryn and Valdés Peninsula see southern right whales from August through November, making a side trip worthwhile if you have the time.
