October marks the transition point in Argentine Patagonia. The winter closures lift, main hiking trails reopen after their snow-season maintenance period, and the region shifts from empty to active over the course of the month. For travellers who want the landscapes without the January-February crowds — and without the January-February prices — October is one of the most practical windows the season offers.
What Opens in October
El Chalten and the Fitz Roy circuit: The main trails around Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre are fully accessible by mid-October. The trail network does not formally close, but conditions in winter make the technical sections hazardous. By October the snow has largely cleared from the primary routes, and the refugios begin reopening. The Laguna de los Tres hike — the classic Fitz Roy approach — is typically walkable in full from the first week of October.
Los Glaciares National Park: Park administration is at full capacity from October 1. The boat excursions to Perito Moreno Glacier operate daily once the season opens, and the walking boardwalks around the glacier face are open. The glacier itself saw a significant partial collapse of the ice bridge over the winter — worth noting as the viewing experience shifts year to year based on the glacier’s movement.
Nahuel Huapi and Bariloche: The Lake District opens earlier than the far south and is accessible year-round, but October brings the spring wildflower bloom to the lower-altitude slopes around Bariloche and Villa La Angostura. The Circuito Chico loop and the trails on Cerro Campanario are in good condition.
Peninsula Valdés: October is the final month of the southern right whale watching season. Females and calves have been present in the Golfo Nuevo since July and typically depart by late October or early November. It is one of the better months for whale proximity, as mothers with calves are calmer than newly arrived males.
Practical Conditions in October
Temperatures in El Chalten in October range from approximately 3°C overnight to 14°C in the afternoon. Wind is a constant at all times of year — Patagonian gusts regularly exceed 80 km/h and can halt hiking on exposed ridges without warning. Layered waterproof clothing is essential regardless of the forecast.
In Bariloche, temperatures are warmer: typically 8°C to 18°C, with spring sunshine more reliable than in the far south. The lake is still cold for swimming, but kayaking and boat excursions operate comfortably.
Accommodation in both El Chalten and Bariloche runs 25 to 35% cheaper in October than the January-February peak. Bus services between El Calafate and El Chalten run multiple times daily once the season opens.
Getting There
El Calafate Airport (FTE) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) with LATAM and Aerolineas Argentinas, typically 3 to 4 hours depending on layovers. Bariloche Airport (BRC) has direct Buenos Aires connections year-round and is around 2 hours flying time.
