San Carlos de Bariloche city centre with Alpine-style buildings overlooking Lago Nahuel Huapi

Bariloche: Travel Guide

Bariloche is Patagonia's most popular destination — a lakeside city in the Andes known for skiing at Cerro Catedral, trekking, and its artisan chocolate shops.

Guides for Bariloche

San Carlos de Bariloche is a city of around 130,000 people on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi in the Argentine Lake District, in Rio Negro Province. The city sits within Nahuel Huapi National Park — Argentina’s oldest national park, established in 1934 — and is surrounded by a landscape of glacier-carved lakes, beech forests, and Andean peaks. Bariloche operates as a year-round destination: winter means skiing at Cerro Catedral; summer and autumn mean trekking, kayaking, and lake-based activities. The architecture of the city centre, built in Alpine stone and timber styles by the early European settlers, is unlike anywhere else in Argentina.

Cerro Catedral

Cerro Catedral, 20 km west of Bariloche, is the centrepiece of the winter season and the largest ski resort in South America. At full capacity it handles over 45,000 skiers per day across 120+ pistes serviced by 62 lifts. The terrain suits all levels, with the steepest runs on the Cóndor and Nunatak faces and extensive intermediate terrain across the main mountain. In summer, the cable car operates for hikers, and the Laguna Toncek and Refugio Frey circuit is accessible from the base.

Nahuel Huapi National Park

The park covers 717,261 hectares around Bariloche and extends into the Andes toward the Chilean border. Lago Nahuel Huapi itself is 557 km² and navigable; boat excursions run to Isla Victoria and the arrayán forest (a native myrtle tree forest), to Cascada Los Cántaros waterfall, and along the Villa La Angostura route. The Bosque de Arrayanes on the Quetrihué Peninsula is a short circuit through trees with distinctive orange-cinnamon coloured bark — one of the few intact arrayán forests remaining. Access is by boat from Puerto Pañuelo near Bariloche.

Circuito Chico

The Circuito Chico is a 65 km road loop that is Bariloche’s standard half-day driving or cycling tour, following Lago Nahuel Huapi’s western shore past Playa Bonita, Llao Llao Hotel (a landmark 1938 stone and timber resort), Bahía López, and returning via Colonia Suiza and Río Bonito. It can be cycled by a moderately fit rider in 4–5 hours. Several miradores (viewpoints) along the route give lake and mountain panoramas.

Where to Stay

Bariloche’s accommodation runs from backpacker hostels near the city centre to high-end lodges on the Llao Llao Peninsula, 25 km west. The city centre (around the Civic Centre and Calle Mitre) is the practical base for restaurants, chocolate shops, and transport. For trekkers, staying near the Civic Centre or the lower lifts gives easy access to trail heads. Hotel Llao Llao, the landmark 1938 resort on its own peninsula, starts from approximately USD 300 per night in high season. In the centre, Hotel Panamericano Bariloche offers lake-view rooms from approximately USD 80 per night, while Hostel 41 Below on Calle Palacios is a reliable backpacker option from approximately USD 20 per dorm bed. For dining, Cervecería Berlina on Bustillo avenue serves craft beer and Patagonian lamb dishes (mains from approximately ARS 8,000–15,000), and El Boliche de Alberto on Elflein street is a long-established parrilla serving grilled meats and Patagonian trout. Rapa Nui and Mamuschka on Calle Mitre are the standout chocolate shops, both offering tastings and takeaway boxes. Prices listed are approximate as of 2026.

Getting There and Around

Bariloche’s Teniente Luis Candelaria Airport (BRC) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires (2.5 hours), Buenos Aires Aeroparque, and Mendoza. Long-distance buses connect to Buenos Aires (20–22 hours), Mendoza (18 hours), and San Martín de los Andes (4 hours via the Siete Lagos route). Within the city, local buses and taxis operate; rental cars give the most flexibility for the park routes.

Best Time to Visit

July and August for skiing — but book accommodation months in advance. December to March for hiking, lake activities, and the full range of outdoor options in stable, warm weather. April and May bring autumn leaf colour to the beech forests and are quieter and cheaper than the summer peak. June is the shoulder transition into ski season.
