Visiting Argentina in October: Weather, Events & Travel Tips

October is consistently one of the most recommended months to visit Argentina among travellers who know the country well. The spring shoulder season delivers most of the benefits of summer with a fraction of the crowds.

Buenos Aires in October

Buenos Aires in spring is the city at its most visually appealing. The famous jacaranda trees that line avenues throughout Palermo and Recoleta are in bloom from mid-October — a purple canopy over the streets that the city is rightly famous for. Temperatures sit at 20–24°C with low humidity, and the outdoor culture of the city (pavement cafes, markets, the long riverfront walks) is fully alive.

October is when Buenos Aires’ spring cultural calendar peaks. The Feria de Mataderos runs on Sundays — a gaucho-culture market with food, crafts, and traditional Argentine folk music. The BAFICI film festival (international independent cinema) sometimes runs into October, depending on the year.

Milongas are busy year-round, but October is a popular month for tango visitors — the temperatures are perfect for the indoor-outdoor mix of Buenos Aires tango culture.

Patagonia in October

October is the full opening of Patagonia trekking season. El Chaltén’s trails — the Laguna de los Tres route, the Laguna Torre trail, and the longer circuits — are operational. Refugios and mountain huts reopen. The wildflowers of the Patagonian steppe are at their peak in October.

Winds: October is one of the windier months in Patagonia. The Patagonian wind is notorious — gusts of 80–100km/h are not unusual in El Chaltén. This affects trail conditions and can close exposed routes on bad days. Build flexibility into your itinerary.

El Calafate and Perito Moreno: Fully operational in October. The glacier walk is excellent, and boat tours to the ice face of the glacier resume their full schedule.

Mendoza in October

Mendoza in spring is excellent — vineyards are green and growing, the snow-capped Andes are visible, and winery visits are at their most pleasant. Temperatures around 22–26°C. Cycling tours between bodegas in the Maipú and Luján de Cuyo zones are fully operating, and the Uco Valley wine region is accessible.

Northwest Argentina in October

October in the northwest is warm — Salta city reaches 25–28°C in the day. The high-altitude routes are clear, and the red rock formations of the Quebrada de Humahuaca are lit by strong spring sun. This is a reliable month for the northwest before the wet season arrives in December.

Iguazú Falls in October

October is a good month for Iguazú — not as hot as summer, not as quiet as winter. The falls are at a medium-to-good volume and the park wildlife is active. Weekdays are uncrowded. An October Iguazú visit pairs well with Buenos Aires as part of a two-destination Argentina trip.

Practical Notes for October

• Patagonia bookings: October El Chaltén accommodation is in high demand. Book at least 2–3 months ahead — good lodges fill from August onwards.
• Jacaranda timing: The Buenos Aires jacaranda bloom is roughly mid-October to mid-November. If this is a priority, aim for the last two weeks of October.
• Wind preparation for Patagonia: Every item of clothing or gear should be windproof or secured. Hats, poles, and layers are non-negotiable.
• Perito Moreno boat tours: Reserve in advance for October, especially for weekends.
• Whale watching: October is the other peak month (alongside September) for southern right whales at Peninsula Valdés. Book boat tours from Puerto Pirámides in advance for weekends.
